The Dickinson Trailblazers win first-place finish

Dickinson Middle School students in front of their physical model

A small group of Dickinson Middle School students spent this year doing the kind of work real engineers and city planners do, and it paid off in a big way!

The Dickinson Trailblazers formed after students showed interest in the Future City Competition, an interdisciplinary challenge focused on imagining a city 100 years in the future. This year’s theme, Farm to Table, required students to research agriculture, economics, zoning, engineering, sustainability, and city planning. They also wrote a research-based essay, designed city plans, built a physical model, and presented their work to judges.

Working during enrichment time and beyond, these students collaborated like a real-world engineering team. Their hard work paid off at their first-ever Regional Competition in Bismarck:

Awards Earned:

  • 2nd Place — Special Award in Zoning
  • 1st Place — Special Award in City Planning
  • 1st Place Overall — Future City Regional Champions

With their first-place finish, the Trailblazers have earned an invitation to Nationals in Washington, D.C. this February.
