School Board Meetings
The citizens elect the Dickinson school board to be legally responsible for school board policy, the budget, expenditures, and expansion. The Board has complete and final control over local school matters. Only State and Federal law may limit it. The school board acts officially only as a corporate group. An individual Board member has no authority outside of a formally called Board meeting. No one acts in the name of the Board except when authorized by the Board to do so.
It is the responsibility to provide tax money for the schools' maintenance and operation and submit bond issues, when necessary, to the District’s voters for the construction of school facilities. The Board also selects the superintendent as its chief executive officer.
The School Board is comprised of five residents of the Dickinson Public School District elected at large to four-year terms.
School Board elections are held in even-numbered years, with all Board member's terms being staggered. The biennial election is in conjunction with the city/county election in June. There is no limit on the number of terms a Board member may serve. For more information on school board elections, please call the superintendent's secretary at the Central Administration Office (456-0002).
The Board elects officers at the annual meeting in July. Officers include the president and the vice president.

The order of business follows this pattern:

f. Student/Staff Recognitions

Because the Board desires to hear the viewpoints of citizens throughout the District, it has scheduled a time period for public participation. Any person wishing to address the Board must make a written request prior to the meeting.
A public participation form is available in the Board room or from the Central Administration Office superintendent's secretary.
Each individual is limited to four (4) minutes, with not more than thirty (30) minutes total time allocated to comments from those attending. Speakers may offer statements relating to school operations and programs; however, the Board will not hear personal complaints against any person connected with the school system. Speakers must address topics that are on the agenda. If a citizen would like a topic added to the school board agenda, they must meet with the superintendent in advance. The Board reserves the right to eliminate or restrict the time allowed for public participation. Any group addressing a common concern may request to designate a spokesperson.
An essential feature of public schools in America is that control over your children's education has been kept close to the people. Because the school board believes in this tradition, your participation is welcomed, and you are encouraged to express your views on matters affecting your schools and students.
