Unfortunately, our schools have had to cancel sporting events and hold indoor recesses due to recent air quality issues.
Here is a breakdown of how these decisions are made:
- When the Air Quality Index (AQI) reaches 101 to 150, entering the "Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups" (orange) zone, we work with students and families who may be more sensitive. Please reach out to your school, and we will work with you.
- When the Air Quality Index (AQI) reaches 151 to 200, entering the "Unhealthy" (red) zone, all schools move recess indoors, and outdoor activities are limited or canceled.
Athletics are more challenging as we monitor current air quality and any patterns of air quality trending up or down. These decisions often have to be made hours before an event. With teams traveling and parents needing advance notice, predicting air quality far ahead of time can be difficult. The process involves extensive coordination, whether rescheduling, relocating, or canceling events.
We rely on data from airnow.gov, which provides the most detailed and accurate information. Our nearest sensors are in Medora and Dunn Center, so sometimes the readings vary slightly from the actual air quality in Dickinson.
We truly appreciate your patience and understanding as we navigate these challenges.
Thank you to everyone involved in keeping our students safe and healthy!
