Since the beginning of the school year, I have been working for RDO Equipment Co. as both my internship and for Work-Based Learning. RDO Equipment specializes in John Deere and Vermeer heavy equipment. Not only do they sell equipment, but they also repair and service it. RDO Equipment Co. has a large presence, with over 75 to 80 locations across several U.S. states (including MN, ND, MT, WY, CA, AZ, UT, SD, and ID). My role there is an internship as a Diesel Technician in the shop. The projects I have worked on have varied from a simple wash to rebuilding a loader after it caught on fire.

When I get to the shop, I start by stopping by Fletcher’s office to let him know I am there. Then, I change into my work clothes and turn my computer on to clock in for the day. From there, I check in with the shop foreman, Will, or other technicians like Justin or Zach to see what they would like me to work on that day. My days vary a lot depending on the jobs I am assigned, but I have found that every task plays an important role in diesel technology.

Some projects I have worked on include putting a blade on a dozer, replacing hydraulic cylinders, performing simple checkups and services, and replacing tracks. In addition, I have helped with engine rebuilds, rewiring, and reworking hydraulic hoses. I have even gone on a field call to help rewire a Vermeer drill with one of the other technicians, Danny. The entire RDO team has been very welcoming, and I am grateful to work alongside them. All of the technicians at RDO have been very helpful in teaching me along the way. Even when I struggle at first, they help guide me and show me the correct way to do the job.

I can say with confidence that Work-Based Learning is a program students should consider. It has taught me a lot about time management and working with others. In addition, it has jump-started me into the field I plan to pursue and even my dream of owning my own ranch. Work-Based Learning is a great opportunity if you want to gain the early experience that colleges and employers are looking for. All of my time at RDO, both through my internship and Work-Based Learning class, has been amazing, and I 100% recommend it to any student who wants to get a head start in their career.
