Heart River Elementary’s gym was recently transformed into a high-energy island adventure as families gathered for our first Survivor Family Night — two evenings designed to strengthen connections, build teamwork, and celebrate the power of family engagement within Dickinson Public Schools.

Inspired by the television show Survivor, K-5 students and their families formed “tribes” and competed in a variety of interactive challenges that tested communication, resilience, creativity, and collaboration. From obstacle courses and problem-solving stations to team-building activities and tribal face paint, the school was filled with laughter, cheering, and school spirit.

However, this event was about more than friendly competition. Survivor Family Night reflects Heart River’s continued commitment to meaningful family engagement. When families are welcomed into the school in engaging, hands-on ways, students feel supported not just academically, but socially and emotionally. Events like this foster belonging, increase positive school connections, and reinforce that education is a partnership between school and home.

Students and families participate in an activity table during a school ‘Survivor Night’ event, with children and adults interacting over crafts and materials. One of the most powerful aspects of the evening was watching students step into leadership roles— encouraging teammates, strategizing with parents, and showing perseverance through each challenge. Families had the opportunity to see their children shine in new ways outside of the classroom setting.

A special and heartfelt thank you goes to our National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) students. Their leadership, preparation, and hands-on support made the entire evening possible. From setting up stations and guiding families through challenges to bringing energy and enthusiasm to every activity, NJHS members modeled service, responsibility, and school pride. Without their dedication and commitment, this event simply would not have been possible.

Survivor Family Night is a shining example of the strong community culture at Heart River Elementary — where students, families, and staff work together to create memorable experiences that build confidence, connection, and belonging.

At Heart River, when we come together as a tribe, everyone wins.
