The Health Science Department at the Southwest Area Career and Technical Education Academy continues to make a meaningful impact on students and the local healthcare community through its Certified Nursing Assistant program. What began as a small class offering has grown into a state-certified CNA program that prepares students for immediate entry into the healthcare workforce.
The program is open to sophomore through senior students and provides classroom, hands-on experience, and preparation for state licensure. In recent years, many students have successfully completed the program and earned their North Dakota CNA license, entering the healthcare workforce or continuing their education in health-related fields.
Southwest Area CTE Academy is also an approved CNA testing site, allowing students to complete both their training and state certification in a familiar and supportive environment. This removes barriers to licensure and helps students transition quickly into high-demand healthcare roles.
Instruction is led by Jaclyn Guillaume and Lynette Silbernagel, who bring both nursing and teaching backgrounds to the program. Their combined experience allows students to gain real-world insight into patient care while building a strong academic foundation.
Graduates of the CNA program are now working in healthcare facilities throughout the Dickinson community, helping address ongoing staffing needs. Local employers have provided positive feedback on the preparedness and professionalism of CTE-trained students, highlighting the program’s impact beyond the classroom.
In addition to workforce readiness, the CNA program serves as a strong steppingstone for students interested in pursuing careers as licensed nurses or other healthcare professionals. Overall, the program offers a valuable opportunity for students to gain certification, experience, and confidence while making a difference in their community.
