Grade 3 Teacher at Roosevelt Elementary
What began as a simple family connection has grown into one of the most heartwarming traditions at Roosevelt Elementary. Several years ago, when my nephew began playing football for Dickinson State University (DSU), an idea took root. What if college athletes could spend time with our elementary students, forming connections that go far beyond sports?
That idea became a reality, and today, our collaboration with DSU continues to thrive and grow. What started with the football team has expanded to include several DSU athletic teams who regularly visit our classrooms. The college students read with our kids, help with activities, share stories about teamwork and perseverance, and, most importantly, become positive role models that our students deeply admire.
The excitement in the building on days when the DSU athletes visit is contagious. Students beam with pride when these athletes walk through the doors, and the laughter and conversation fill the hallways. For many of our young learners, these interactions spark new dreams. These dreams include going to college, playing sports, and giving back to their community someday.
The visits also offer valuable lessons that extend far beyond academics. Students learn about dedication, kindness, and community service by watching their DSU mentors in action. These experiences have created a lasting impact, inspiring confidence and joy in every student who has had the chance to participate.
Dickinson State University’s head football coach, Pete Stanton, shared, “We have enjoyed our time coming into the school and spending time with the students. Our players look forward to it, and it is a valuable experience for them and a win-win situation for all. We are thrilled to give back to our youth and be a part of this wonderful community.”
This partnership reminds us all that education is about more than what happens inside the classroom. It’s about building relationships that shape character, inspire hope, and strengthen our community. The joy and inspiration these DSU athletes bring to our students will be remembered for years to come.
