For generations, the Midget mascot was a proud symbol of Dickinson High School. It carried tradition, spirit, and countless memories and achievements on the field, in the classroom, and throughout the community. That legacy will always remain an important part of who we are.
We understood the deep connection to the Midgets name. At the same time, as students began to experience penalties and barriers in activities outside our community because of the nickname, it became clear that a change was necessary.
This year, Dickinson High School launched a new chapter with the introduction of the Mavericks name and mascot. When we began the change process, more than 800 nickname/mascot submissions were received from students, staff, alumni, and the community, reflecting the passion Dickinson holds for its school identity. A committee of student athletes and coaches reviewed those ideas and narrowed them to five, asking guiding questions such as: Does this mascot reflect who we are and who we want to be? Can we imagine it proudly displayed on uniforms, spirit gear, and in our school? Will it inspire pride and energy at games and events? And most importantly, does it make us proud to be part of Dickinson High School?
A second selection committee, that included students, coaches, staff, alumni, parents, and community members, worked to refine the choices to two.
We gave the final choice to our students, who got to cast the deciding vote on both the name and a logo concept. The final choice belonged to them, because they are the ones who will represent it in competitions, performances, and school traditions
Over the summer, DPS worked with graphic designers to finalize the logo and branding, kicking off the year with the official look. The Mavericks brand reflects the same values that have always defined Dickinson: determination, resilience, and community pride. With a modern design and new energy, the identity will carry forward into athletics, school traditions, and the new high school building.
Students are embracing the Mavericks name in school and at events, carrying forward the long tradition of Dickinson pride. We invite you to fill the gyms and the stands and experience that pride for yourselves.
Whether you graduated as a Dickinson High Midget or now walk the halls as a Dickinson High Maverick, you are part of the same story. To honor that connection, the new high school will feature a memorial wall celebrating Dickinson High through the years, ensuring the legacy and the memories of generations before remain an important part of our history.
