February marks Career and Technical Education (CTE) Month, a time to celebrate the invaluable role that CTE programs play in shaping the future of our workforce. In Dickinson, the Southwest Area CTE Academy (SWCTE) is leading the way, by providing students with hands-on learning experiences in high-demand career fields.
With the completion of our initial construction phase in December, SWCTE is now in full operation, offering 14 specialized programs designed to prepare students for regional workforce needs. The academy proudly serves over 1,118 students from seven area high schools, offering 73 different classes and over 2650 class enrollments, that equip them with the skills and knowledge needed to thrive in their chosen fields.
One of the academy’s standout features is its growing partnership with Dickinson State University (DSU), which allows students to seamlessly transition into higher education. Through college-level welding, health science, and diesel technology programs, high school students can gain college credits and real-world training, setting them on a direct path to rewarding careers.
But SWCTE is not stopping there. The academy is constantly evolving, guided by input from local business partners and employment data. Looking ahead, 2025 will bring exciting new opportunities, including a Mechatronics Certificate program and the expansion of the Public Safety pathway in collaboration with the Dickinson Fire Department. Additionally, students will have access to new courses in Agricultural Business/Finance and Business Management, broadening the range of career paths available. Petroleum Operator and mechanical maintenance programs will also become a reality for our students in the coming year. So many opportunities that have never been available to our students.
Beyond the programs, SWCTE has become a home for students of all backgrounds and interests. Whether pursuing a skilled trade, exploring business leadership, or preparing for emergency services, there is truly something for everyone. The academy’s success is a testament to the dedication of its teachers and staff, the generous support of local industry partners, and, most importantly, the students who take the initiative to explore new career pathways.
As we celebrate CTE Month, we recognize the transformative impact of Southwest Area CTE Academy in shaping Dickinson's future workforce. We thank our dedicated teachers and staff who come every day with excitement to work and inspire our students. With innovation, collaboration, and a commitment to student success, SWCTE continues to open doors, creating a brighter future for our community.
