Spreading Warmth

Mrs. Swenson's class wearing hats

By: Robin Swenson, 4th Grade Teacher at Berg Elementary

Happy Holidays! I teach 4th grade at Berg Elementary and wanted to share the gratefulness of my mother-in-law, Sunya Swenson. Since 2010, she has been knitting stocking caps for each of my students. She begins knitting the hats in late summer, in several different colors for the students to choose from and hopefully match their winter coat.

All the yarn and time is donated by her as she wants each child to be warm. She donates the extra hats to the office for our principal to give to students in need. On November 9th (first storm), she called me right away to let me know the hats were ready if the kiddos needed them. The kiddos love and appreciate the hats every year. They love to wear them in the classroom, and it's neat to see the students wearing the hats made special for them.

Each year the students write her a thank you, which includes a picture they draw of themselves with the hat they chose. That is her satisfaction for making them, and it's evident when I see the smile on her face as she reads each student's "thank you".
