JE Dunn Experience

Ty Nelson with JE Dunn team

By: Ty Nelson, DHS Student

In the past three months, Kelby Gion and I have been working as office interns at JE Dunn Construction. JE Dunn Construction is a National Company with 25 offices in the US. They have worked on thousands of projects. Some projects that the JE Dunn Construction in Dickinson has done include St. Joseph's Hospital, the Dickinson Public Safety building, the new DSU softball and soccer fields, The Trinity ECC, etc.

When I get there, I usually check my emails to see if anyone has sent me something. An example would be, working on a new project or editing a drawing for them. If not, I’ll ask Ryan Anderson (Senior Project Manager) what project or job he wants me to do for that day. The projects I have been currently working on include Trinity ECC Project and the JE Dunn office expansion. I have also looked at the drawings for Dickinson Public Schools, Theodore Roosevelt National Library, Rugby Hospital, and The Williston ETC building.

I have been doing weekly reports for the Trinity ECC project. This will include a PowerPoint explaining all the new things that were installed that week. As well as upcoming activities in future events. The JE Dunn office in Dickinson was too small. So, JE Dunn wanted to expand. They gave Kelby and me a list of things they wanted for the expansion. Kelby helped draw the new office, as well as we both called companies/people to help work on this project with us.

Everyone who works at JE Dunn has been very helpful and very nice. They have also helped me with my career path for the future. Marc Mellmer (Vice President) was a big help when he was explaining to me what the difference is between going to school for Architecture and Construction management. This helped me by making the switch from going to college for Architecture, to now going to school for Construction Management.

I think that the Work-Based Learning (WBL) program will be a great experience for future students. Since you get to do actual things in the real world, get an idea of what working for that career is, meet people that could potentially help you in the future, and you don’t have to sit in a classroom. All in all, my experience at JE Dunn has been amazing and I would highly recommend students to get into a WBL class.
