Sparking Music Creativity with Ukuleles

Mrs. Wagner class with the newly arrived ukulele's

By: Karen Wagner, Music Specialist at Lincoln Elementary

My name is Karen Wagner, and I am the music specialist at Lincoln Elementary. I have been at Lincoln since 2014. From 2015-2021, I traveled between Lincoln and Prairie Rose. During my time at Prairie Rose, I discovered how much fun it was to incorporate ukuleles into the music classroom. I had never played the ukulele, but I enjoyed learning along with my students; they seem to love it as much as I do!

In August, I became aware of a giveaway Kala Brand Music Co. was sponsoring for music educators.  They would draw 15 names from entries across the nation, and the winner would receive a classroom set of ukuleles for their school. I entered the contest, and several weeks later, I received the following email.

“If you are receiving this email, that means you are one of the fifteen lucky winners of a Class Set of 36 Waterman Ukuleles for your school. Congratulations! In over 15 years of doing business, Kala has seen first-hand how transformative the introduction of ukuleles can be to a classroom for students of any age.”

Several years ago, my colleague/co-teacher, Kayla Kilwein also won the classroom set of ukuleles from Kala Brand Music Co. We have seen first-hand the enjoyment and benefits our students receive from being able to play ukuleles.  I am excited to incorporate our new instruments into our daily music instruction and showcase them and our students during public performance opportunities.
