“Legacy, what is a legacy? It’s planting seeds in a garden you never get to see” Lin-Manuel Miranda. I have spent four years within the walls of DHS, and it is now coming to a close. As I look back on my experiences, I am left wondering what that garden will look like and what seeds I planted in my short time here.
As I began Freshmen year, I decided to quit my pursuit of sports to participate in the fine arts programs that DHS had. This included participation in Speech, Student Congress, and Drama. On top of this, I helped create and run the Table-Top Gaming Club and worked as the captain of the Congress team. I joined Student Council and worked for four years to better the school. Our proudest accomplishment was the creation of the quote wall project that we finally began working on this year. It feels like a physical representation of a legacy. It is far from complete, but the seeds have been planted. All four years, I took on a lot and was very busy, but I do not regret it.
Every activity I got a chance to be involved in helped me build essential skills that will follow me throughout my life. Not only did it give me skills, but it also gave me a chance to build up those around me as well. I got multiple opportunities to be a light in the lives of others. I got a chance to help be a friend to those in need and help others build skills that will benefit them throughout their lives. I learned what it takes to be a leader, to be compassionate, and to be a positive impact in a world so desperately in need of a change.
I would like to believe I was able to make a difference within the halls of DHS. That I will be remembered for what I stood for, and the actions I took to be a light in the lives of others. I hope all of those I was able to impact during my time remember me and carry on the torch of trying to make a difference in the school. While I may not be able to see the garden, I know one day I’ll return to DHS and be proud of the seeds I could plant during my time here.
