Lincoln Elementary’s student council comprises a group of students grades 3-5 who are elected every two months. They are school leaders who promote school spirit and help those in need in our school and community, leading to a majority vote to help a local animal rescue. The student council presents an excellent opportunity for students to grow and develop leadership skills.
The student council met to discuss ideas on raising money for the cause. The first fundraising activity developed was to create “Quarter days” every Friday, allowing students that brought a quarter to school to wear a hat or bring a stuffed animal. Several students brought their stuffed animals squeezing out of backpacks. Others had stuffed animals larger than some students and found their place sitting at student desks throughout the day.
Quarters were adding up quickly, but to help increase the donation, students offered popcorn for a quarter on National Popcorn Day in January. With the help of Lincoln staff and student council they popped, filled, and delivered 495 bags of popcorn!
To celebrate Valentine’s Day and continue to raise funds, the student council members planned one last event. Candy grams, which included a blow pop sucker donated by State Ave. Veterinary, were offered to students to purchase for a quarter to give to other students and staff. The student council helped sell these before and after school. The event was so successful that it sold 1,150 blow pop suckers with the candy grams in two days.
Once all the fundraising activities concluded, the day came to pick a rescue and surprise them with the donation! Students decided to donate the proceeds to Bakken Paws animal rescue. An all school assembly was held with Dr. Lenz from State Ave. Vet and Tasha with Bakken Paws rescue, along with puppy Bruno. Students learned about what goes into rescuing animals as well as vet needs. Lincoln Elementary surprised Bakken Paws with a total donation of $839! We are incredibly proud of our Lincoln student council team.
