School counselors in our district play many vital roles. While it can look different from school to school, we all have similar duties within our days. We typically teach classroom lessons in kindergarten through 5thgrade using the QuaverSEL curriculum, hold skill-specific small groups, and meet with students individually. This is just a basic overview of what we do- many school counselors are also involved in school committees, teams, and hold different leadership positions within their building.
I have always known that I wanted to work with children and students, but I wasn’t sure which path would lead me there. Finally, I decided to follow in my family’s footsteps and go into education in Dickinson. My mom was a 1st-grade teacher at Lincoln for many years, one of her brothers taught at Hagen, and my grandpa was a counselor at DHS. Teaching was never my passion, but I knew something in the schools would be. That is why I decided to follow my grandpa’s path and become a school counselor.
My favorite part about being a School Counselor at Prairie Rose is getting to interact with all our students. It is always fun to go into the classrooms and get to work with students that I might not get to on a daily basis. I am also involved in our Behavior Team as well as the Student Lighthouse Team. Our Student Lighthouse Team is made up of students in grades 1-5 who show leadership in the classroom and around the building. The people at my school, both students and staff, are the reasons I enjoy being a school counselor!
