Senior year is supposed to be fun, unique, and overall memorable. Well, I can tell you one thing, it’s definitely been memorable for all of us Seniors. Looking back on previous years that other Seniors had the privilege to experience, I would say that we completely got the short end of the stick.
As a Senior at Dickinson High, I would agree that it has been difficult, going to class every other day and only seeing a few people is different. When asked about writing, I had the opportunity to talk to a few friends about the issue of interacting with Covid in school. Everyone has mixed emotions about their Senior year going in such a direction; a few students explained that they’d rather be going through the hybrid schedule than being completely online, while others completely dislike the hybrid days wanting to go back to a normal schedule just to have a sense of normality. It’s odd having to live a life like this, where one day I’m at school and the next I’m not and then wearing masks everywhere; it’s definitely something everyone had to adjust to.
When talking to another student about the Covid schedule they mentioned something that really stuck with me; they explained that with things how they are, they have to, “pretend Covid doesn’t exist.” That at this point, you just have to pretend that this is life. It definitely sucks to say that “this is life” when you just want something normal, but no one is trying to give you normal because they simply can’t. I wish all the time I could’ve gone to a football game with all my friends or experienced my last Homecoming dance or even had a normal performance without wearing a mask, but sadly I’ll never get that. Covid has affected not only the Seniors, but everyone in the community and the world. We can’t sit by and say “woe is me” when everyone else is also feeling the same thing.
I want to say that I’m incredibly grateful to be a part of this amazing class of kids who have pulled through all of this mess. We have been through a lot going into our Senior year, and all of us are still here kicking butt.
I’m proud of what I’ve accomplished so far in this rough year and I can’t wait to see what else the class of 2021 can accomplish. In the end, I can say that I will never forget my Senior year and all the memories that I have created at Dickinson High School.
