New Year – A New Chapter

Marcus Lewton addressing staff at training

Last fall, I had the opportunity to witness a powerful moment in the classroom. A teacher asked his class what the one thing that would really impact their learning. Students were guessing hard work, reading, paying attention, but they were surprised when he said it was their attitude in the classroom.

At different times of the year, I admit I need what my mom used to call an "attitude adjustment." Thankfully, this year has been less snowy.  But I still fall to the occasional seasonal and life frustrations.  My wife, whenever I complain, reminds me with, "Yes, Marcus, that's a first-world problem." It's interesting how perspective and attitude go hand in hand.

In my twenty-plus years as an educator, I've seen all sorts of perspectives – neglected kids, bullied students, colleagues dealing with tough times, or single parents doing their best. It's clear: perspective changes our attitudes.

As we start the new year, let’s challenge ourselves to see things in a bigger way. We have the power to shape the narrative of our community. A positive attitude and understanding different perspectives not only enrich our lives but also empower those we teach. May each new chapter be one of growth, empathy, and a commitment to a positive learning space.

I'm leaving you with a quote from Alex Moritt, "New Year – a new chapter, new verse, or just the same old story? Ultimately, we write it. The choice is ours.”
