Thank you, Dickinson

Thank you, Dickinson

DPS Superintendent

Since becoming superintendent in July 2020, one of my favorite things is to spend time in schools greeting kids, visiting, and sharing a meal. So much can be learned by simply listening to children. Their smiles and voices are windows to their thoughts and dreams. October 24, 2023, marked a momentous occasion for our community as we joined together to support the $69 million bond referendum, which garnered an impressive unofficial approval of 70.6%.

The next day, I had the opportunity to visit the high school. Staff were exuberant and grateful to the public for their support. What truly struck me, however, was the tone set by our students. None of them will likely be in school to see the completion of a new cafeteria with ample space and classrooms free from the constraints of overcrowding and unpredictable and uncomfortable temperatures. Some will be in school to see renovations. Yet, the tone of all students was one of excitement. They were excited for future students.

Both of my boys will have graduated by the time the new addition is complete. I am excited for them, however, because I believe at least one of them will stick around Dickinson. It's important to remember that schools are not built and improved solely for today's generation but for the future. Good schools are a magnet for talent, fostering a sense of belonging and attracting future generations who will call this community home.

Reflecting on our history, from 1950 to 1968, our community united to build four schools, passing referendums each time, with the vision that these investments would enrich our community for years to come. As someone who grew up here, a father with children here, and perhaps one day a grandfather with grandchildren in this community, thank you.

We will work diligently over the next few months with ICON architects on the design, programming, and construction process. Our goal is to keep you updated throughout this process and hopefully welcome students into the new building in the fall of 2027.
