Weather Guidelines

Decisions on whether students are to go outside are based on the guidelines listed below.
(Guidelines apply to rainy, windy and cold weather conditions.)

Before School:

  • When the temperature and wind chill are above zero, students will be sent outside.
  • When the temperature and wind chill are between zero and -10 degrees, students will be sent to gym until 7:50.
  • When the temperature and wind chill are lower than -10 degrees, students will stay in the gym.

Recess (short recess and noon recess):

  • When the temperature and wind chill are above -10 degrees, students will be sent outside.
  • When the temperature and wind chill are below -10 degrees, students will stay in their classrooms.

Students who have an excuse because of illness, coughs or colds will be allowed to remain indoors during recess provided they have a note from parent or doctor. (Notes must be dated and signed.) The note will be valid for only one week or less.

Parents, please check for appropriate dress before your student leaves for school. Students are expected to bring appropriate headgear, gloves and coats. Snow pants and snow boots are not required, but are highly recommended; however, if your child(ren) wish(es) to play in the snow, snow boots and snow pants are required.

School guidelines for wearing coats are as follows:

·    If temperatures are 50 degrees or below, students must wear coats

·    If temperatures are 51 to 60 degrees, long sleeves or sweatshirts must be worn

·    If temperatures are 61 degrees and above, students may wear short sleeves

PARENT NOTIFICATION SYSTEM –

Dickinson Public Schools has recently upgraded our school notification system Alert Solutions to SwiftK12.  SwiftK12 is the method of communication used should there be school closure or delayed starting of school usually due to inclement weather.

Be prepared for North Dakota’s changing weather conditions.
