Powerful Tools for Caregivers

Caregivers of Adults with Chronic Conditions

What is Powerful Tools for Caregivers?

Powerful Tools for Caregivers is an educational program designed to support you, the family caregiver with the tools you need to take care of yourself.

Let’s face it—caregiving can be stressful—physically, emotionally, and financially.  Powerful Tools for Caregivers will help you to:

¨ balance life

¨ reduce stress

¨ learn how to communicate your feelings

¨ increase ability to make tough decisions

¨ learn about helpful resources.

It is not a support group, but provides a highly supportive,      informative environment.

Six 1½ hours class sessions once a week.

When you take care of yourself, everyone benefits.

Who Should Be in the                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                         Driver’s Seat, Parent or Child?

As we look at setting rules/limits for our children, this is one of the questions we must ask ourselves.

A child’s job is to push rules/limits; the parents’/caregivers’ job is to set them.

Parents Explore:

  • how to avoid conflict with your child
  • how to encourage responsibility land self-managment
  • how to resolve problems
  • how to prevent frustrating no-win power struggles
  • how to build trust, consideration and respect.

Children Explore:

  • how and why rules are important
  • working alongside authority
  • learn how to set their own boundaries
  • setting boundaries as a family.

Begins Tuesday, May 28, 2019

Conscious Discipline

“Discipline isn’t something you do  to children, it’s something you develop with them.” Dr. Becky Bailey

  • Teach the skills of cooperation and caring
  • Be accountable as a model and avoid teaching the very behavior you want to prevent
  • See from the child’s eyes.  Is the child’s  behavior extending love or calling for love?  Are they hurting or happy?  Are they asking for information or understanding
  • Make your language effective
  • Recognize that discipline is an opportunity to teach, not  punish

Beginning Tuesday, March 26, 2019

6:00-7:30 pm.   Childcare provided.

  • learn what your child’s love language is.

Your love language may be totally different from that of your child.  While you are doing all you can to show your child love, he may be hearing it as something completely opposite.  Discover your child’s primary language and learn what you can do to effectively convey unconditional feelings of respect, affection, and commitment that will resonate in your child’s emotions and behavior.
