About the Dickinson Public Schools Foundation

The Dickinson Public Schools Foundation was established in 1989 by Gordon Paulson and other Dickinson citizens.  A Board of Directors was created, bylaws were written and the Foundation applied for their 501(c)3 status as a tax exempt organization.  Our mission is to provide financial support to enrich education through private financial support.  We fund projects that go above and beyond the school district’s budget; projects that are not the school district’s responsibility.

Mission statement:
“The mission of the Dickinson Public Schools Foundation, Inc., is “to provide private financial support to enrich the quality of education in the Dickinson Public Schools.”

Special Projects Include:

peters_andersonAnnual Grant Program – Our main purpose is our grant program.  The DPS Foundation has awarded over $386,376 in grant projects since the Foundation was formed.  Projects that the Foundation has funded range from technology to STEM to Science equipment to professional development and more……  These projects enrich education in the school district and impact nearly 100% of the students enrolled in the Dickinson Public Schools.

Our grant applications are available on the Foundation’s web site.  Teachers and administrators may apply for a grant.  Grant applications are due by December 15.  The Foundation’s Program Allocations committee reviews the applications and prioritizes them using our grant rubric.  The top grant applications are invited to present to the entire Foundation Board at their January Foundation meeting.  The Foundation Board decides which grant applications to fund.  Then we go to the schools and surprise the grant applicants to announce the grant awards.  It is the best day of the year for Foundation Board members and it is why they serve on the Foundation Board.  Grant recipients report back to the Foundation to let us know how their project made a difference for their students.

tech photo-1Sponsorships – The Foundation budgets $1,500 annually to help students that qualified for national competitions with their expenses.  Sponsorship requests are due by May 1 and the superintendent determines which requests to fund and the amount.  We have helped students attend national Technology conventions, Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) Conferences, Skills USA competitions (welding fabrication), National Speech competitions, People to People World Leadership forums, Hugh O’Brien Youth (HOBY) Leadership seminars, National History Day competition and more.  It’s a way to help our students excel at the highest levels.

Paige Yon scholarship 2Scholarship Program – The Foundation has managed several scholarships over the past several years.  The scholarships help our graduating seniors at the next level of their education.  Some of the scholarships include:  the Jack Carlson Memorial Scholarship, Michael Callahan Hockey Scholarship, George Frenzel Memorial Scholarship, Nancy Joy Sjursen Music Scholarship and soon we will have the Ruth Lenz Memorial Music Scholarship.

Alumni Relations –  We work with class reunion organizers by supplying them with a list of their classmates and a Class Reunion Planner.  Each year the Foundation sponsors a lunch and tour of Hagen Junior High (formerly Central High) for the Dickinson High School 50 Year Reunion class.  Many of the alumni that attend the luncheon haven’t been back to their old school since their graduation.  We love hearing their stories and memories.

Special Events – The Foundation has sponsored several special events to raise money for the Foundation’s projects and build friends and awareness of the Foundation.  Our “signature” event is our annual Mystery Dinner Theater which is held annually in February.  We hire a Director, and advertise for area actors to audition for the play.  Dickinson is blessed with many talented people that share their talents with our audiences.  They donate their time and talents.  Watch for our ticket sales announcements!  We usually sell out for the Friday and Saturday performances in 15 – 30 minutes.  We will also have a Thursday night performance.

Other special events include:  a Dakota Wizards basketball game at DHS, sponsoring the Dickinson Bandshell concert, and more.

We invite you to continue the quality of excellence that is our proud tradition and to contribute to the Foundation.
