Children’s Internet Protection Act (CIPA)
Information Sheet

“No school or library may receive discounts unless it certifies that it is enforcing a policy of internet safety that includes the use of filtering or blocking technology.”

Schools applying for e-rate funds must have in place a technology protection measure that blocks or filters internet access. This filter may be disabled for bona fide research for adults. The policy must include monitoring the on-line activities of minors.

The Internet Safety Policy Must Address:

  • access by minors to inappropriate matter

  • safety and security with mail, chat, etc.

  • unauthorized access

  • unauthorized disclosure

  • measures to restrict minors’ access to materials that are harmful to minors

This measure is necessary for e-rate funding and possibly Title III of the ESEA and Library Services and Technology Act funds.

EDUTech Education Technology Services
EDUTech provides filtering to our school district with 8e6 Technologies Hardware. The URL database is updated daily. This filter prevents students from accessing web sites that are not consistent with K-12 curriculum.

What do I see when a site is blocked?
At the present time you will see a red screen. When the new filters are in place a blocked site notification screen will appear making clear the web site is not accessible.

What categories are blocked?
Alcohol, anarchy, chat, criminal skills, cults, drugs, gambling, hate groups, obscene & tasteless, personal ads, pornography, public web proxies.

The filtering policy can be found on the EDUTech web site. www.edutech.nodak.edu/support/policies/internet_filtering/
