Heart River Elementary held its Math and Reading Family Literacy Night for grades 3-5 on November 13th 2008.  The night began at 5:30 with Sloppy Joe’s from the Dairy Barn  and pears and carrots from our Fruit and Vegetable Healthy Habits grant.  Students and their families ate supper in the school cafeteria.

This year’s school theme is LEAPING INTO A LEARNING LIFESTYLE; JUMP INTO HEALTHY HABITS.  Everyone from students, parents and school staff should have a learning lifestyle for a lifetime and healthy habits to help maintain it.

At 6:00 everyone moved to a 3rd ,4th, or 5th grade classroom  The sessions were focused on the new Math Investigations.  The strategies used for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division were highlighted along with some games that can be used at home.  Hagen Junior High provided daycare for families with younger children in the Title I classroom.

Mrs. Jackie Glaser, with assistance from Mrs. Darlene Medlar, led the 4th grade students and their parents through the strategies used for multiplication using the promethean board.  Student volunteers were used to solve the problems on the board using the investigation strategies so all could learn the steps involved. They even had a parent give it a try.

Mrs. Kelly Steinbach and Mrs. Ali Schnieder  conducted a session in Mrs. Steinbach’s classroom for the 5th grade students and parents.  Families took part in investigation strategies used for multiplication and division using the promethean board and student volunteers.  The 5th grade session used the progression of all the investigation strategies used in addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

Mrs. Deb Walth and Mrs. Patti Levorsen used Mrs. Walth’s room to have students show parents several of the games they have used to improve their number sense in grade 3.  Practice improves their knowledge and sense of numbers to one hundred.  Strategies for addition and subtraction were also shared along with games to help practice their strategies.

At the end of the evening some puzzlebooks, a reading book, backpack, and many door prizes were distributed to students and families.  A good time seemed to be had by all who attended.
